1What role does hospice play in medical aid-in-dying?
Hospices are the best source of end of life palliative care, especially for patients considering aid-in-dying. In states with legalized aid-in-dying, eighty-five (85) to ninety (90) percent of patients who take medications to die are simultaneously accessing home hospice. The goal of the American Academy on Medical Aid-In-Dying (ACAMAID) is for one-hundred percent (100) of patients considering aid-in-dying to also be receiving hospice care.
2What is the hospice policy on aid-in-dying?
Hospices have varying policies on their depth of involvement with aid-in-dying. Most hospices provide non-judgemental conversations and referral. Some hospices provide full aid-in-dying support along with their palliative care. Certain organizations, especially those with strong religious affiliations, have opted not to actively participate in any way.
